Body Composition Differences in Men and Women
Men tend to be leaner than women. This is because men only have 3-5% essential fat while women have 8-12% essential fat. Essential fat consists of the fat in heart, lungs, liver, spleen, kidneys, intestines, muscles, the central nervous system, and bone marrow. In women it likely also includes additional fat important for child bearing and hormone-related functions.
Regional Fat Deposition
Where we deposit our fat is largely genetically determined. There is no evidence that we can spot reduce. As can be seen from the graphs below, at the same % body fat, women tend to carry more fat in their arms and legs and less fat in their trunk than men.
